The WEBB Surname DNA Project began 9/1/2002 with one pair of samples which hoped/expected to match, a pair of matched WEBBs transferred from another study, and two samples who responded from postings on message boards and mailing lists. There are now 14 identifiable related WEBB groups, beyond the matched pair we began with, which has so far failed to match any other participants. For convenience, these are named after the oldest identified relative in each group.

In 2004, we differentiated lines for Christopher Webb of Braintree, Mass. and Richard Webb of Stamford, Conn. This largely "debunks" the legend of Sir Henry Webb, stating that they were brothers, which persists to this day.

Our first trans-Atlantic match occurred in January 2005, with a Wiltshire participant matching a southern Webb family. This line has been expanded and now has more than five matches.

In March 2005 , we defined the John Webb [Pennsylvania] group with a number of well-documented participants. The month also began to show matches between the New England and "southern" Webb families.

We continue to grow quickly from April 2005 to present, adding new testing facilities [biotix.de] and by mining SMGF [Sorenson] databases. Our many participants and contacts have also assisted in recruitment, and today we have over 100 Y-DNA participants.
